Mercedes-Benz Logo Meaning & History

There are many theories behind the meaning of the Mercedes-Benz logo, but according to Mercedes-Benz officials, the logo refers to the company’s drive for universal motorization. The founders of Mercedes-Benz believed that one day their company would conquer land, air, and sea, which is represented by the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star logo.

Here’s a short history of the Mercedes-Benz logo:

  • 1890: Mercedes-Benz was founded by Gottlieb Daimler in 1890 and it was originally known as Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG). Gottlieb and his sons Paul and Adolf worked together to begin building the reputation of DMG.
  • 1909: Gottlieb sent a postcard to his sons that made mention of their home with a distinctive three-pointed star. It’s said that since then, DMG began utilizing the three-pointed star logo on all of its vehicles as a homage to the founder’s home location.
  • 1926: The three-pointed star logo initially featured the color blue but it was later changed with a laurel border.
  • 1934: The three-pointed star logo became more recognizable in 1934 as it was changed to feature a silver color.
