How to Check the Oil Level in Mercedes-Benz Vehicles

Oil Change

Mercedes-Benz Synthetic Motor Oil Replacement* is one of the most important regular tasks on your maintenance checklist, but even in between your visits, you’ll need to know how to check your car’s oil level. Thankfully, every new Mercedes-Benz includes an electronic oil monitor, empowering you to get an accurate reading without ever stepping out from behind the wheel.

How to Check Your Car’s Oil Electronically

Learning how to check the oil level in your car genuinely only takes a moment. Here’s everything you need to do, laid out in three simple steps:

  1. Find a level place to park, and turn off your engine. Wait at least five to ten minutes for the oil to settle.
  2. With a key-based ignition, insert the key and turn it to position two. With push-button start, simply press the start button once without placing any pressure on the brake pedal. Your electronics will turn on, but your engine will remain off.
  3. Now just use your steering-wheel mounted controls to flip through the menu options. You’ll eventually see “Engine Oil Level — Measuring Now” appear beneath your instrumentation.

All you’ll need to do is wait to get your reading. If you see “Engine Oil Level – OK,” you’re good to get back on the roads of South Riding and Centerville. If you do need to add more oil, see below for instructions or schedule service to let us take care of the issue. In the event of a “Measuring Not Possible” readout, simply try again in a few moments.

How to Check Car Oil with Your Dipstick

Most new Mercedes-Benz vehicles do not come equipped with a dipstick, but in the event that your model does have one, it’s easy enough to learn how to check the oil level in a car by hand. You’ll want to park the vehicle on level ground, wait 15 to 20 minutes for the engine to cool, and then take the following steps:

  1. Locate the oil dipstick, remove it, and wipe it clean using a clean rag.
  2. Reinsert the dipstick into its sheath, and then draw it out once more.
  3. Read the level. You should be able to identify a “Min” line and a “Max” line, or see a cross-hatched area where your level needs to be!

It’s never a bad idea to observe the color and consistency of your oil when you’re checking the level by hand. If it smells burnt, looks especially dark, or has small particles suspended within it, you may be dealing with issues.
